A/L ICT Lesson 05 Practice Tool: Operating Systems

This is a practice tool for Unit 5 of the Sri Lankan GCE Advanced Level ICT syllabus, Grade 12 (Competency 5), on operating systems. It covers what an operating system is and the services it provides, its classification (multi-user, multi-tasking, real-time and time-sharing), how the OS manages files and directories with contiguous, linked and indexed allocation, formatting and defragmentation, how it manages processes through the process states, the Process Control Block, context switching and the long, short and medium-term schedulers, and how it manages memory and devices using the MMU, virtual memory, paging, device drivers and spooling. This unit is usually worth 3 to 5 MCQ marks and 10 to 15 marks on Paper II.

Seventeen activities are grouped into six modules: matching drills, flip cards, sorting exercises, true-or-false swipe tasks, step-sequencing for the file-open path and the process life cycle, a fill-in form, and timed quizzes. Your score is kept in your browser, so you can close the page and return to it.

The tool opens in English. Tap the language button to switch the whole tool to Sinhala. Both languages will use the same terms as the Lesson 5 notes once that page is published.
