O/L ICT Lesson 1 Practice Tool: Computers and Information
This is a practice tool for Unit 1 of the Sri Lankan GCE Ordinary Level ICT syllabus, Grade 10 (Competency 1), on the place of the computer in the world of information. It covers what ICT means and the difference between data, information and knowledge, the everyday uses of ICT in society such as e-government, education, health, agriculture, industry and entertainment, the computer viewed as a system with input, process, output, storage and communication, the way processing turns raw data into useful information, and the evolution of computers through the generations from vacuum tubes to transistors, integrated circuits, microprocessors and artificial intelligence, along with how system characteristics like speed, size, capacity, accuracy and cost changed over time. This is a foundation unit that appears in MCQ and short Paper II questions.
Eighteen activities are grouped into six modules: matching drills, flip cards for ICT and generation concepts, sorting exercises, a swipe task on telling data from information, an ordering task for the processing cycle and the generations, and timed quizzes.
