O/L ICT Simulator Tool 3. Number System

O/L ICT Lesson 3 Practice Tool: Number Systems

This is a practice tool for Unit 3 of the Sri Lankan GCE Ordinary Level ICT syllabus, Grade 10 (Competency 3), on number systems and how data is represented inside a computer. It covers the decimal, binary, octal and hexadecimal number systems and their bases, converting between binary and decimal using place values, working with hexadecimal and octal digits, how characters are represented using ASCII and Unicode, the difference between a bit and a byte, the units used to measure data capacity from the bit and byte up through kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes, and the idea that n bits can represent two to the power n different values, which also explains colour depth. This is a core unit that appears in MCQ and short Paper II questions.

Eighteen activities are grouped into six modules: matching drills, flip cards for number-system and encoding terms, sorting exercises that tell binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal apart, ordering tasks for place values and data units, and timed quizzes. Your score is kept in your browser, so you can close the page and return to it.

The tool opens in English. Tap the language button to switch the whole tool to Sinhala. Both languages use the same terms as the Lesson 3 notes.
