O/L ICT Lesson 5 Practice Tool: Operating Systems
This is a practice tool for Unit 5 of the Sri Lankan GCE Ordinary Level ICT syllabus, Grade 10 (Competency 5), on operating systems. It covers what an operating system is and how it differs from application software, common examples such as Windows, Linux, Android and iOS, the main functions of an operating system including process management, memory management, file management, device management and the user interface, the different types of operating system such as single-user, multi-user, single-tasking, multi- tasking and real-time, the difference between a graphical user interface and a command line interface, managing files and folders with operations like copy, move, rename and delete, and system utilities such as antivirus, disk defragmenter, backup and disk cleanup. This is a core unit that appears in MCQ and short Paper II questions.
Eighteen activities are grouped into six modules: matching drills, flip cards for operating systems and key terms, sorting exercises for OS jobs and software types, a swipe task on utilities, an ordering task for filing, and timed quizzes.
